You may not be able to have our usual Memorial Day bash this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the day with your family and your propane barbecue grill. Just make sure you’re ready for this year’s celebration by following these five tips.

5 Memorial Day grilling preparations:

  1. Do your grocery shopping early. Food shopping on holidays is always a challenge, but this year it will be particularly important to stay ahead of the game (and ahead of your neighbors). Get it now and avoid the Memorial Day scramble.
  2. Line up your favorite recipes. If you’re looking for delicious and healthy propane grilling recipes, it pays to do a little digging around for ideas to wow your friends and family. Here are some resources to help you get started:
  3. See below for one of our favorites – a delicious mushroom, bacon and cheddar burger!
  4. Give your grill a once-over. If you have recently replaced your propane tank, do a quick leak check – and, as always, follow safe grilling practices.
  5. Make sure you have enough propane gas. Don’t get caught without propane halfway through your cookout! If you have a built-in propane grill, check your propane tank and schedule a propane delivery if needed; if you have a replaceable propane barbecue cylinder, check your fuel level and exchange it if needed (here’s a cool trick for checking your propane levels in your cylinder).
  6. Upgrade your charcoal grill to propane. Nothing beats the speed, convenience and precision temperature of a propane grill. If you’re still cooking on charcoal, stop dragging that bag and switch to propane. Making the perfect mushroom, bacon, and cheddar burger

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds of ground chuck
  • 2 portabella mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Marinate mushrooms for 30 minutes in Worcestershire sauce (reserving 1 tablespoon).
  • Combine mayonnaise, remaining Worcestershire, mustard, parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
  • Remove mushrooms from marinade (discard unused marinade) and grill; slice mushrooms.
  • Form ground chuck into 4 patties. Season with salt and pepper and grill. Just before desired doneness is reached (recommended 160°F internal temperature), top burgers with cheese and grill until cheese melts.
  • Generously spread bun with flavored mayonnaise, top with burgers, red onion, mushrooms and bacon.
